Corporate
Profile
CarMax, a FORTUNE 500 company, and one of the FORTUNE 2009 "100 Best
Companies to Work For," is the nation's largest retailer of used cars.
Headquartered in Richmond, Va., CarMax currently operates 100 used car
superstores in 46 markets. The unique CarMax consumer offer provides our
customers the opportunity to shop for vehicles the way they shop for items
at other national retailers, and it is structured around four customer
benefits: low, no-haggle prices; a broad selection; high quality vehicles;
and a customer-friendly sales process. During the fiscal year ended
February 28, 2009, the company retailed 345,465 used vehicles and sold
194,081 wholesale vehicles at its in-store auctions.
The
CarMax Story
In 1991, we surveyed
consumers to find out what car shoppers liked and disliked. Not surprisingly,
buying a car was right up there with going to the dentist for a root canal.
What Consumers Asked
For:
Don't
Play Games: Let me know the price right away, not after hours of
haggling and mind games.
Don't Waste My Time:
Have one sales person work with me from start to finish. And don't make me drive
all over town to find the right car.
Provide
Security: Inspect and recondition all cars and back them with a limited
warranty so I don't have to worry what will happen when I drive off the lot.
Make Car Buying Fun:
Be helpful, not pushy.
Buying a car should be as much fun as driving one home.
With your wish list in
mind, we opened the first CarMax in Richmond, Virginia, in 1993. Our used car
superstores and our new car locations have quickly become the largest in the
nation.
And best of all, our customers
couldn't be happier. In fact, 93% of our customers would recommend CarMax to
a friend. We hope you will too!
